Searching by geographic location on twitter is pretty simple, but involves a couple of steps.
- Acquire coordinates. I recommend using wikipedia. Find a notable place that exists on wikipedia near the center of your search target. On the right side of the page there should be a coordinates link. At the top of the next page there are the coordinates in the format we need (40.758889,-73.985278).
- Open up twitter or tweetdeck and format your coordinates like this:
- Remember to remove any spaces you may have in the search query and adjust the radius (1km in our example) as you need.
- Give it a try
This can be especially useful if you're looking to follow a hash tag for a specific place that may be used by a couple of locations. For example if you're interested in what's going on in portland maine, you might mostly see posts from portland oregon. Try this search to fix that: #portland geocode:43.666667,-70.266667,10km.
Note: Searching by coordinates on twitter is imprecise and will not work 100%.
